CYPRUS PROPERTY WORLD
OCTOBER 2008 NEWSLETTER
They say that Cyprus is an island that can be enjoyed whatever the season and many residents and visitors think that October is the best month of the year.
Both day and night time temperatures are cooler and more comfortable, but the water temperature in the sea and your pool is still lovely and warm.
There are two public holidays in Cyprus in October :
- 1st October is the day Cyprus celebrates its independence from Britain
- and on 28th October Cyprus celebrates Greek National Day, also called Ochi Day, along with Greek communities around the world. Schools, offices and shops are closed on these days and there are parties, processions and national events.
We hope you enjoy our October newsletter - this month sees the start of our monthly restaurant spot – for October we’ve chosen a wonderful traditional Cypriot restaurant in the Troodos mountains area. CYPRIOT FOOD – THE TRADITIONAL WAY
The Sama, centre of Spilia village, close to Kakopetria, Tel. 22 316473 or 99571112
Our featured restaurant this month is very special because it is Cypriot hospitality at its best. There is no menu – you simply take what is on offer that day – and reservations are recommended as it is very popular with those in the know. Many who have been there say it is like going back to the Cyprus of 50 years ago, a family run restaurant, with the mother of the family doing the cooking and turning out some pretty mouthwatering traditional dishes.
You will find the Sama by going north from Limassol on the B8 - Silia is just before Kakopetria. The restaurant is in the centre of the village and looks unassuming with a few café tables outside and a dining room inside. It also has a stone-walled cellar with tables where you can eat which is atmospheric and cosy.
The restaurant is beautifully decorated with antiques from the area and all the food is prepared in traditional ceramic pots and clay ovens. Even the plates, bowls and wine cups are handmade by Cypriot craftsmen and the coffee is brewed over a traditional stove.
Every day, mother and daughter decide what to cook based on what’s available and fresh locally. So everyone gets the same food and from the moment you arrive and settle at your table, the unbelievably delicious food appears at a relaxed pace. There are salads and the traditional starters of taramasalata, humous, tsadziki and haloumi cheese, with a taste that’s out of this world. Then it’s the dish of the day, which might be a slow-cooked casserole – especially in winter – or a soup or bean dish – or perhaps a tender kleftiko cooked in a clay oven. Wash it all down with the local wine and it’s as near perfection as you can get. The joy here is that you never know what to expect in terms of food, but you can always expect excellence from even the simplest dishes. What’s even better is that after about five minutes, you begin to feel like one of the family – their hospitality is famous in the region. So why not give it a try – but call to book first, it’s very popular. You’ll find out why when you taste the food!
Price: Approximately €45 for two people, including wine.

Open Art
During October, practising artists across the Western Limassol and Paphos districts open their homes and studios to give the public a rare opportunity to visit and see their work and chat to the artist.
From Polis Chyrsochous to Peyia and across to Western Limassol, studios will open and painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists, mosaic, glass and textile artisans will receive visitors, offer refreshment and answer questions – with no appointment necessary
Participating artists will be opening their studios to the public on selected weekends throughout October 2008, between the hours of 10AM to 1PM and 2PM to 6PM. This will give visitors the unique opportunity to meet the artist and see their work. To help you find your way, participating artists will display an Open Studios banner or poster outside their premises. The Guide to the Open Studios 2008 has directions to the studios, addresses and telephone numbers of each participating artist.
